June 5 and 6th 2004 (my mother's birthday), I joined three hardy individuals from the Alpine Club of Canada to go on a trip to scramble around the Opal Hills (near Maligne Lake) and hike Hidden Valley (near Roche Miette). The trip was led by Van Konrad who led me and two others I had not met before (Delphine and Nataliya) up and down hills, bouldering on rock walls and a visit through the mounted animals of the famed Athabasca Hotel of Jasper.
Opal Hills is on the left side of Maligne Lake, the approach is swift and then you have to scramble up soft scree (or scree/snow in our case) to a ridge. From the ridge you can see the other side and the view (as you can see in the photos) is spectacular. Rather than attempting Opal Peak on the left, we went right and climbed a lesser peak.
Hidden Valley is near Roche Miette and is actually a sport climbing area with great climbing walls. We hiked through the valley, scrambled up to a plateau and then made our way down. All in all an enjoyable trip with fantastic people - thanks folks!
